PLUM BELT - TRAPPING
Ever feel trapped? Our opponents do all the time. Perhaps that's because we love the Plum Belt. Trapping is a tactic, and we reward that with the bling of the fruit: The Plum Belt.
Can you see a classic trap available to white on the chessboard below?
Yep. You knew it. Bishop captures pawn, as seen below, and white is suddenly ahead by six points.
Of course The Knight School kids are trained to the teeth to generate traps far more complicated than this. Can you spot the brilliant move for white in the situation below?
Find it? You bet you did! It is to move the knight and allow the bishop to attack and trap the queen! Good work! See the chessboard below for a clear view of the move that wins the queen for white.
When the knight moves to the green square, the bishop on the yellow square is uncovered and attacks the queen! The knight on the green square now controls the red square, which is the only remaining escape square for the the black queen. The bishop on F1 controls all of the orange squares. The queen is out of escape squares and has to capture the bishop to minimize this devastating loss. White has trapped the black queen and can now raise that hand high, call "Referee!," and claim that rare Plum Belt.
